Learn More About Our Advisory Services

Complex Case Advisory Service

The Complex Case Advice Service provides HR teams with expert advice on more complex individual cases, helping them to support performance and wellbeing for the neurodivergent individual, and reduce risk for the organisation.

This service is most valuable where:

  • There are significant issues around a neurodivergent individual’s performance, wellbeing or absence that you have been unable to resolve through standard internal processes. You may be considering, or have initiated a capability assessment or performance improvement plan, or a disciplinary.
  • The neurodivergent individual has raised concerns about the support they have received or how the case has been handled. They may have submitted a formal complaint or grievance.
  • Relationships have broken down between the neurodivergent individual, their manager or HR team.

When might this service be useful?

The service is useful in cases where:

  • There are significant issues around a neurodivergent individual’s performance, wellbeing or absence that you have been unable to resolve through standard internal processes. You may be considering, or have initiated a capability assessment or performance improvement plan, or a disciplinary.
  • The neurodivergent individual has raised concerns about the support they have received or how the case has been handled. They may have submitted a formal complaint or grievance.
  • Relationships have broken down between the neurodivergent individual, their manager or HR team.

How does the service work in practice?

One of our expert HCPC-Registered Occupational Psychologists will be assigned to conduct an initial scoping assessment of the case.  They will:

  1. Hold a one hour virtual meeting with your HR representative to ensure they understand the context of the case, what has happened so far and any issues or questions that your HR representative wishes to address.
  1. Conduct a one hour high level review of paperwork relevant to the case (such as adjustments agreed/not agreed, performance documents, notes of key meetings with the individual and reports of any workplace needs assessments that have been conducted).
  1. Complete a short, draft report with the conclusions of their initial assessment, including recommendations for next steps, together with their estimate of any relevant costings.

    Their recommended next steps might include:
  • An investigation where we review all written documents and conduct interviews with the individual and their manager to understand different perspectives in more detail;
  • completing more detailed advice for the HR team on process improvements;
  • that you seek legal advice (we can recommend lawyers with experience of these sorts of cases);
  • a workplace needs assessment for the individual (if not already completed) to make recommendations on adjustments and support;
  • a psycho-vocational assessment which includes testing of cognitive function, such as processing speed, working memory, verbal comprehension and other functional performance related abilities;
  • coaching for the individual or manager;
  • co-coaching for the individual and their manager together; or
  • mediation for the individual and their manager
  1. A one hour phone / video debrief with the HR manager to answer any questions and consider the draft report and recommendations, before finalising the report.
  1. With the HR representative’s agreement (and agreement from the individual and their manager if relevant), the psychologist will then complete the report and initiate these further steps.

Limitations of the service

  • The consent of the individual will be required for their personal data to be shared with Genius Within.
  • We are unable to provide legal advice but can support you to identify an employment lawyer with relevant expertise if needed.
  • We can make recommendations for adjustments but cannot formally determine whether adjustments are reasonable or not.
  • We cannot confirm whether someone is fit to practice in their role.
