Why a Person-Centred Approach Matters

Getting into work can be life-changing, but for people facing complex barriers to employment, the journey isn’t always straightforward. So how can we move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and help more people find and sustain meaningful work?

For many people, finding employment isn’t simply a question of having the right qualifications, writing a good CV or performing well at interview. Health conditions, disability, neurodivergence, low confidence and previous experiences of exclusion can all create barriers to entering or returning to the workplace.

While traditional employability programmes have an important role to play, standardised approaches may not always address the underlying challenges that prevent someone from finding or sustaining work.

At Genius Within, we believe effective employment support starts with understanding the individual, recognising their strengths and identifying what they need to succeed.

Looking Beyond the Barriers to Employment

Two people may be experiencing similar difficulties finding employment, but the reasons behind their challenges could be totally different.

For one person, anxiety might make attending interviews particularly difficult for them. For another, it could be that the workplace environments they have experienced didn’t accommodate their sensory needs. Someone managing a long-term health condition may need support to understand how their symptoms affect their ability to do their job.

This is why a person-centred approach to employment support is so important.

Rather than focusing solely on what someone cannot do, psychologically informed and strengths-based approaches explore their abilities, aspirations, experiences and individual circumstances.

Understanding these factors helps employment support providers develop personalised strategies that address barriers while building confidence, independence and the skills needed for sustainable employment.

Delivering Meaningful Employment Outcomes

At Genius Within, our experience demonstrates the value of specialist, personalised employment support.

Between 2020 and 2025, we supported over 750 people into meaningful work, helping them overcome barriers to employment and achieve their goals.

Our outcomes across different employment and workplace support programmes demonstrate the difference that tailored interventions can make:

  • 56% IPES job outcomes, compared with a 31% provider average cited in the programme’s source data.
  • 83% of IPES job starters sustained employment, demonstrating the importance of support that extends beyond securing a job.
  • 55% of participants in our Work and Health cohort entered employment within three months, compared with a cited programme average of 12%.
  • Over 95% of commercial clients receiving workplace support remained in employment after one year.

These results reflect different programmes and client groups but collectively highlight the importance of personalised support that considers both entering the right kind of employment and remaining in work.

The Connection Between Health, Wellbeing and Employment

Health and employment are closely connected. Good work can provide financial security, social connection, purpose and structure. Equally, poor health, unsuitable working environments and a lack of appropriate support can make it difficult to enter or remain in employment.

For people experiencing health-related barriers, employment support may be more effective when it considers health and wellbeing alongside practical job-search skills.

Health coaching can play an important role, helping people to better understand the impact of their health issues, and develop self-management strategies to address their health-related workplace challenges.

Combining employment and health perspectives provides more holistic support, and recognises that finding a job is only one part of the journey.

Moving Beyond Job Outcomes to Sustainable Employment

Securing employment is an important milestone, but it shouldn’t be the only measure of success.

Sustainable employment means helping people find work that is appropriate for their needs, builds on their strengths and offers opportunities to thrive over the longer term.

This may involve identifying reasonable adjustments, developing workplace strategies, building self-advocacy skills or providing ongoing specialist support.

Integrating psychologically informed and neuroinclusive approaches into existing employability services can help create more appropriate and accessible pathways into work.
