Psychometric Assessments: Measure What Matters

Dr Nancy Doyle, Genius Within Founder and Chief Science Officer, discusses psychometric assessments and shares a guide published by the Society of Occupational Medicine.

We are delighted to share that this guide to psychometric assessments has been published by Society of Occupational Medicine – co-authored by Gail Kinman, Kevin Toeh, Almuth McDowall, Rainer Kurs, and Richard Kwiatkowski, and myself, with strong input and peer review from our colleagues in the field.

What is a Psychometric?

✅ A questionnaire that has been evaluated for reliability, validity, minimise bias and standardisation of use/scores.
✅ A useful way to assess, screen, triage and understand experience.
✅ Used in healthcare, psychology, recruitment and education.

What is the risk of using questionnaires which are not psychometrics?

❌ False positives or false negatives
❌ Making poor decisions based on incorrect data
❌ Risks to wellbeing, employment, legal duties

How can I tell if a questionnaire or screener is a good psychometric?

💡 Ask to see the test manual and check for reliability and validity etc
💡 Use tools that have been peer reviewed
💡 Consider whether the publisher is qualified specifically in psychometrics
